Chapter 23

Not like Marshall

The next morning, Jin drove himself and Nate to school, Nate having showered and borrowed one of Jin’s larger and less outlandish shirts, which was black and plain save for some embroidered feathers, also black. From the expressions on people’s faces as they pulled up in Jin’s loud truck, Jin supposed any speculation about whether or not they’d slept with each other yet, based on the kiss, had just ended.

It was hard to believe Friday had only been three days ago.

“Prepare yourself,” said Jin as he cut the engine.

“For what?”

“For talk.”

Nate grinned. “Jin, I’m a demonstalker having sex with a wyrdling who just breezed through a Takai demon attack. Nothing anyone has to say could possibly be more interesting than that.”

Jin laughed. “Fine,” he said, but he felt a little wobbly. He hoped it was just aftereffects from last night’s paralysis, but he suspected it also had something to do with this – with arriving together. Like he had sometimes with Salvador and Leia.

This was just a one-off though, and he had already made up for it with practically solid hair-spikes, dense eyeliner, a Vaselines t-shirt, studded boots and black jeans webbed with steel chains.

“Are you okay?” asked Nate.

Jin realised he still had one hand on the key in the ignition. He pulled it back. “Fine.”

“Jin.” Nate’s hand came to his knee. “I havenae forgotten what you said about the boyfriend thing.”

Jin looked at him.

“Repeat after me,” Nate said. “We’re just fucking and it’s good.” Somehow it sounded both awkward and thrilling.

Jin huffed out a laugh.

“Say it.”

“We’re just fucking and it’s good,” he said, looking into Nate’s eyes as he did. It was, in fact, rather better than good.

Nate’s expression shifted and Jin watched him take another of his long, quiet, subtle breaths. Then he smiled, green flecks bright in the low morning light, and said, “Right, are you ready?”

Jin widened his eyes in lieu of reply and they vacated the truck. Everyone who had been staring at them immediately looked the other way.

All except Sam and Sadie, who were standing together at the edge of the carpark wearing more or less identical expressions.

“When did you two get chummy?” Nate demanded as they approached, addressing Sadie.

“I told you,” she grinned at Sam, “my brother’s grumpy no matter how much sex he gets. Nice to see you again, Jin.”

Sam folded his arms admiringly.

“Please stop discussing my sex life,” Nate told her.

“But it embarrasses you so much.”

He scowled.

She laughed and rolled her eyes. “Wha’ever, but if you dinnae want people discussing your sex life, dinnae turn up together on a Monday morning and also,” she plucked pretend fluff off his arm, “dinnae wear Jin’s shirts – though I have to admit, they are a lot more stylish than yours. Now come wi’ me, I have to update you on Mum, she has of course gone insane,” she smiled happily. “You dinnae mind do you, Jin?”

“Er, not at all,” said Jin, feeling and resisting the ridiculous, defensive urge to add, We’re not boyfriends.
